Playing Tag (Social Bookmarking Tools)

Week 3 Tagging, Folksonomies, & Technorati

I am interested in the social bookmarking technology explored in Week 3 Tagging, Folksonomies & Technorati. I searched del.icio.us and I wish I had time to explore the sites I found. However, I am more interested in having my bookmarks available to me from anywhere than sharing them. I can't imagine anyone being that interested in the websites I visit routinely.

While I feel a bit uncomfortable with social classification, I think the unstructured approach to tagging is interesting because I get to see how others think about and categorize information. Tagging my bookmarks may be a good way to organize and refer to bookmarks I use in my office and during information literacy sessions.

Technorati and other blog directories are great for exploring the blogosphere. I think such tools can be used to get a general feel for public opinion and attitudes when student are researching and writing about social issues and current topics. I am considering introducing blog directories as another search tool for Internet research in my library instruction classes.
